Childelwynegate, Schadwyngat, Shaddongate
...Perhaps you know the origins of the name Shaddongate?
As a walled city, Carlisle has many entrances or gates such as Irishgate, Scotchgate, Rickergate and Botchergate, each named after a location or person such as Caldewgate, named after the river that skirts around the west of the city and then there’s Shaddongate… well.... In Memories of Old Carlisle by Topping & Potter, 1922, they write, Shaddongate by the way is referred to in an account of 1645, as Shading-gate, a name which suggests that is was so called because it was in the shade or shelter of Irish Gate. Elsewhere however it has been stated that Shaddongate is a derivation of the old English name Schadwyngat from 1424. Earlier still however, the Cumbria Archive have in their possession a mortgage by Adam son of Roger to Robert, Bishop of Carlisle of a croft with appurtenances in Childelwynegate (Shaddongate) next to the Dunebek for which the grantor used to pay an annual rent of 6d. to the Bishop. The gift made in consideration of a sum of money which the Bishop had given to grantor in his great necessity. Witnessed by John of Boulton, mayor of Karleol, Richard de Mora, Peter the tanner, John of Bounelston, Gilbert of the Wood (Nemore) William son of John, Nicholas son of Osay, Gilbert the clerk, Alan de le Bek. (Dated circa: 1260 - 1270) Of course this still doesn't tell us the origin of the name... still feel free to try and read the deed below. (good luck!) |
